ECHO Rising Star Season 2024/25

Already at a very early age, Lukas Sternath’s life revolved around music. Born in Vienna in 2001, he traveled the world as member of the famed Vienna Boys’ Choir and gave concerts on the most important stages in Europe, North America and Asia. He received his musical training on the piano from Anna Malikova and Alma Sauer at the University of Music and Performing Arts in Vienna. Since 2022 he studies in the class of Igor Levit at the University of Music, Drama and Media in Hanover. Further mentors include pianists Till Fellner, as well as Ingolf Wunder and Sir András Schiff, whose masterclasses he attended.

At the 71st International ARD Music Competition in Munich in September 2022, Lukas Sternath caused a sensation – in addition to the First Prize, he was awarded seven special prizes, including the Audience Prize and the Prize for the Best Interpretation of the Commissioned Composition. The year before he was a multiple prizewinner at the 63rd International Ferruccio Busoni Piano Competition in Bolzano, at the 14th International Schubert Piano Competition in Dortmund and at the 17th European Piano Competition in Bremen.

In spring 2023, Lukas Sternath was chosen as an ECHO Rising Star of the 2024/25 season, nominated by Musikverein Wien and Konzerthaus Wien as well as the Philharmonie du Luxembourg. Within the series, he presents recitals at the ECHO concert halls in Katowice, Budapest, Cologne, Hamburg, Dortmund, Amsterdam, Stockholm, Porto, Luxembourg, Lisbon, Brussels, Birmingham, London, Vienna, Barcelona, and Baden-Baden.

In the 2024/25 season, Lukas Sternath will perform at the Salzburg Festival with the Mozarteumorchester Salzburg conducted by Ádám Fischer. Further guest engagements include performances with the Wuppertal Symphony Orchestra and Patrick Hahn, the Deutsche Kammerphilharmonie Bremen with Tarmo Peltoloski, the Kammerakademie Potsdam with Antonello Manacorda, the Orquestra Sinfónica de Galicia and Elim Chan, the ORF Radio Symphony Orchestra Vienna with Markus Poschner, and with the Bamberg Symphony Orchestra and Andrew Manze. He will give recitals, among others, at the Philharmonie Essen, the Nikolaisaal Potsdam and the Gewandhaus Leipzig. Other highlights of the season include his duo concert with Igor Levit in London, as well as his chamber music concerts across Europe with Julia Hagen in Gauting, St. Pölten, Vienna, L’Aquila, Milan, Turin, and Dortmund.

In past seasons, Lukas Sternath made his recital debuts at the Musikverein Vienna, the Hamburg Elbphilharmonie, the Tonhalle Zürich, and the Klavier Festival Ruhr. As a soloist he collaborated with the Bamberg Symphony Orchestra and its chief conductor Jakub Hrůša on a tour to Hamburg and Cologne, the Vienna Symphony Orchestra and Patrick Hahn, the Summer Academy of the Vienna Philharmonic with Tugan Sohkiev, the SWR Symphony Orchestra with Giedrė Šlekytė, and with the Munich Philharmonic conducted by Andrés Orozco-Estrada.
