Luigi Cherubini: Requiem – Together with his ensembles, Philippe Herreweghe brings this masterpiece to life in performance
When Ludwig van Beethoven dedicated his Third Symphony to Napoleon Bonaparte, the composer had no inkling of how the French Revolution would unfold or of the general’s growing self-aggrandizement.
Beethoven admired Cherubini’s solemn sound world and the sombre radiance of the Requiem. In its severity he found the spirit he sought in his own sacred music, and he wished for this Requiem to be performed upon his own death.
Together with his ensembles, the Orchestre des Champs-Élysées and Collegium Vocale Gent, Philippe Herreweghe brings both works to life.
