The Varian Fry Quartett was founded by four members of the Berlin Philharmonic Orchestra in the season of 2012/2013. Inspired by the deeds of the American journalist and freedom fighter Varian Fry and the geographical proximity of the “Varian Fry Street” to the Berlin Philharmonic, which is the musical home of the four musicians, the four award-winning instrumentalists dedicate themselves intensively to string quartet literature.
The cornerstone for this young formation was laid in the 2007/2008 season: At the time, some of the musicians were already playing together as scholarship holders of the Karajan Academy. The joy of making music together in the supreme discipline of chamber music as well as the lessons with Jan Diesselhorst and Christian Stadelmann, two members of the Philharmonia Quartet, left a lasting impression and the passionate desire to make music in a permanent string quartet. To this day, the musical exchange with Christian Stadelmann has been a source of inspiration for the young string quartet.
The Varian Fry Quartet gave its first public concert at the Easter Festival in Baden-Baden. Since then, the musicians have played their debut concerts in the chamber music hall of the Berlin Philharmonic, in New York at the country’s largest classical radio station, in Carnegie Hall and in Los Angeles. In January and February 2018, the young quartet undertook its first major and highly glorified tour in Japan. The Germany tour in January 2019 also received excellent press reviews.
